Pg. 1088 #4
When I think of a love song I always think of the song “When You Say Nothing At All” by Alison Krauss. I suppose it is the first song to come to my mind because it is what I imagine love to be like. The thematic similarity that I take from a contemplation of this song and the poems in this section has the most to do with how when someone is in love, everything else fades away. For example in the song I chose it says “without saying a word, you can light up the dark” and the poem entitled “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love” states that the narrator will “make thee beds of roses”, I say that it shows that love makes everything else fade away because its thematic theme usage of importance and grand nature of love displays real life, no we usually do not literally make the one we love a “bed of roses” and it is not really true that someone’s words can “light up the dark” but I do think that this is what love makes you feel. It is the reason why people go back for more even after they have been hurt. Love is too grandiose and singular to be left alone. I think happy love songs and poems convey the singular nature of love, these poems brim with longing and impossibility because in many ways this is what love is all about, the struggle and mystery. Although as time goes by words and what they mean change, I think the basic emotion behind some things and topics remain. Love is one of those things and topics, in looking over the poems I noticed that they, for the most part, display and also convey not just the longing that love can create but also the exhilaration that it can evoke. This was really interesting to me because a lot of modern songs convey the exact same principle. “When You Say Nothing at All” is one of those songs, it is one of happy love but it also conveys a longing for the subject of the song and an exhilaration over that subject. When I listen to it, it reminds me of something being like new, it reminds me that love makes everything fresh and exciting. Even if you sit on a couch and just watch a movie with someone your in love with, it will feel like the best thing in the world even if you have done it a thousand times. I think these elements are universal and timeless. No matter what country, race, religion or era you come from some things are universal and unchanging. The poem entitled “Song” is not a happy view on love, but the others are more hopeful. “Song” conveys the realistic aspect of love, the aspect that is practical and the one that knows that you cannot live off of love, no matter how much you might want to. This realistic point of view is not really echoed in the other works nor is it reflected in the song I chose for comparison.

How very very wierd, I chose that same song to write about, I have loved it from the first time I heard it when I was about 7. It is such a great song, even when you're little you get that the song is of very great emotion. I didn't compare it to the poem as you did, which looking at it now I really wish I would have because your points are very valid. I didn't even think to compare it with that particular poem, I simply compared it and other songs to all poems in general. I too beleive that love is just as this song depicts it, and I beleive that if it is a truly good song or writing that you will be able to envision it in your mind vividly like you can reach out and touch it, to feel it within your soul, blazzing and burning like it is a part of you. I think the poems of love that are not showing things being amazing and full of laughter all the time are showing a true love. We all know that not everything is a joy ride, and with love comes compromise and sometimes hurt, but being able to get over these bumps in the road and live happily is the main point. Love conquers all, there will be hardships and not all of it will be butterflies and rainbows, but if love is true and strong these things will not matter, because at the end of the day love will save you and you will be able to compromise to save that love you have.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE the song that you picked for this blog (and Allison Krauss for that matter) .It has been one of my favorites for a really long time! It is just so pure and honest and is so beautiful because of that. I think it really does a good job of describing a true love. I agree that the line about lighting up the dark is really important. It is like saying that no matter how bad things might be in your life, having that love makes every thing seem ok. And you are right that sometimes being able to just sit on the couch and watch a movie with the person you love can be the best thing in the world. As a matter of fact, I think that being able to be happy doing just that says a lot about how strong someones love is; it shouldn’t be about doing all of these extravagant things with someone. Why do you think none of the Bachelor couples last? Because when all the glitz and glamour from these amazingly unrealistic dates are gone and they are just doing dinner and a movie they realize they don’t really have any chemistry!
ReplyDeleteI did my blog on the same song as you did, just kidding I never heard of it. But it’s interesting how a lot of people can have different songs that they think of when they think of a love song. I seen another person that did a blog on the same song as yours, I guess it’s kind of popular. You compared some of the poems to different parts of the song and you did a great job at that. It would have been easier for me to do my blog if I would have known about a song like this. Instead I had to fill in a lot of space with useless information. I seen you noticed that most of those poems convey a longing for love. I also like where you talked about other poems where they portrayed love more realistically and differently, especially the “song” poem. Your blog was very good and interesting to read, good job.
ReplyDeleteThat is really cool that you related these two time periods together. I understand what you mean in the song by Allison K. That is actually one of mine and my girlfriends songs. So I definitely can relate to what you meant when you said that the song relays how love really is to you. I think it's really cool that you related the kinds of love that are shown in the two different time periods, and connected them through it. They time period we live in is filled with many different things that they didn't have back then...so when you connect two things, and one of the things was mixed together with a million other different things, then you get a really unique...well...thing. You looked past what I would have been blocked with, and found a unique way of relating the two that you were supposed to relate. Great job Stacey. I noticed that you used the word thematic twice. The word is very unique and I hear it rarely. You used it twice in a single blog. Just a side thought that I thought Id let you in on. I think that a high vocabulary is interesting, yet sometimes very, very unnecessary. Not in this case though. So, great job with the blog, hallelujah is the last week!
